Chapter 13

Ansel

“That’s the best rock ever.” Kissing my sweet boy’s head as he climbed onto my lap and showed me another special treasure, I snuggled him closer and carefully leaned against the curtained wall of the fort. “It might even be prettier than the stick.”

He nodded, binkie still firmly in place as he rested his head against my shoulder.

It’d been quite a while since he’d actually spoken, but I’d gotten giggles and huffs and all the hugs a Daddy could want as we’d played. Assuming he’d hop out of my lap and go bring me another treasure to show me, I waited a bit too long to do anything when he just sat there.

Hmm.

We’d explored his fort and read books and he’d shown me all his stuffed animals before moving on to more special treasures, but it seemed he was finally slowing down. Yep, we needed some hand signals at the very least because little Charlie seemed to think Daddies could read minds.

Somehow that had to be Austin’s fault.

Kissing his head again, I rolled the tiny rock between my fingers and tried to decide what to do next. “I think it’s time for cute omegas to get their jammies on.”

The rabbit costume was cute but seemed entirely too hot to sleep in.

“Would you like little jammies or grown-up pajamas?” Either way, it was late and I’d seen him doing his best to hide more than a few yawns.

Charlie was very quiet as he started to shift, but after a moment, he nuzzled my chest and one hand came up to start petting my shirt.

Tattoos?

Something about my tattoos?

Well, even playing let’s kiss Daddy’s tattoos had happened when he’d been quite a bit less little, so that seemed to indicate moving in a more grown-up direction.

Right?

“Grown-up time and then kisses and snuggles?” His nod and the kissy sound that escaped around his binkie made me chuckle. “I think that’s a perfect plan.”

Well, it was a perfect outline but we’d see how to put the plan into effect.

“Charlie leads the way.” Because carrying him out wasn’t an option. I already needed to nearly turn sideways to escape, and holding him at the same time would be impossible.

The fort was fabulous with bookshelves as the base and cabinet doors that looked like a closet before you realized that once you crawled past them you were in another world, but it was not built with alphas in mind. Fuck, a tall beta would’ve struggled, so I had to be very careful as I climbed out even though the doorway wasn’t too small.

He giggled, probably realizing something to that effect. He wasn’t completely big because he scrambled out of the cave he’d created and giggled like a madman as I huffed and squirmed to get out. I barely fit underneath the bed but escaping was another story altogether.

“Did it.” Flopping on the floor, I stared up at my giggling boy. “You know, a wider doorway would’ve been nice.”

That seemed to be one of the funniest things he’d ever heard based on how he laughed and collapsed on my chest.
